The Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k Sets the Stage for Speed: A Premier Race Course for Fast Runners
Sports Backers’ beloved event proves to be a record-setting course
RICHMOND, VA – The Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k presented by Kroger has historically been marketed as a fun run that’s achievable for all fitness levels and abilities. While the event is certainly that it’s also the ideal course for breaking records. At the 2023 event, two people broke age group records for the 10k in Virginia, and 11 of the 33 current age group records in the 10k distance were recorded at “Richmond’s Biggest Block Party.” The flat and fast terrain, coupled with the vibrant energy provided by thousands of spectators along Monument Avenue, the 10k provides an unparalleled experience for athletes seeking to push the limits of their speed.
“If you want to take a swing at your 10k personal record, come to the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k,” said Keira D’Amato, who holds the Virginia state record for women 35-39 in the 10k distance. “Not only is the course fast, but there are people lining the course to cheer you on, including my personal favorite, the Jammin’ Grannies.”
“The Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k is a hallmark of RVA hospitality and grit,” said 2024 Olympic Trails Qualifier, Sophie King. “Not only is this flat, out-and-back route the fastest 10k course I’ve ever competed on, the dedicated volunteers, spectators, and fellow athletes provide an electric racing environment certified to foster a PR!”
Over 25 years the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k has earned a reputation as one of the most sought-after races in the region, attracting top-tier talent and recreational runners and walkers alike. Known for its scenic route, which winds through historic neighborhoods and entertaining crowds, the course offers participants a unique blend of speed and spectacle.
In addition to breaking records, the 10k is also a place where recreational runners can earn bragging rights by qualifying to be a member of the Sub :40 Club. Participants that run the event in 39:59 or better earn an exclusive piece of swag celebrating their accomplishment at the finish. It’s no surprise that with over 23,000 participants, not everyone can start at the same time. The event boasts 26 starting waves, 12 of which are seeded, meaning they require proof of a qualifying time from a previous race or run. Faster participants are encouraged to sign up for one of the seeded waves to surround themselves with runners hoping to cross the finish line with a similar pace.
Registration for the 25th annual Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k presented by Kroger is open now. The event takes place on April 20, 2024. Sign up at www.sportsbackers.org.
