Team was recipient of 2021 Williams Mullen Community Impact Award

Richmond, VA – The George Wythe High School Girls Volleyball team was the recipient of the 2021 Williams Mullen Community Impact Award, which is part of the Richmond Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholar-Athlete Awards program that takes place each June. The Williams Mullen Community Impact Award aims to recognize a Richmond region high school-based sports team for improving their community through volunteerism, fundraising, or other altruistic activities, and George Wythe Girls Volleyball was recognized for their work supporting their fellow students at George Wythe and residents and families in the surrounding community. The honor includes a $2,500 award to the team that is selected.

On Thursday, February 10, members of the team presented the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation with a $500 donation out of their award monies. The event took place at George Wythe High School and was organized by Angela Moore, an academic coach at George Wythe, and Catherine Few, head coach of the George Wythe Girls Volleyball team. Also in attendance were Dr. Stefanie Ramsey, Richmond Public Schools Coordinator for Athletics, Health & PE, Driver Education, Stephanie Rizzi, 5th District Richmond School Board Member, two representatives from the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation, and Jacki Quinlan, Director of Youth Programs for Sports Backers.

Since receiving the honor, the team has also used award money to sponsor breast cancer awareness educational events in October 2021 and has partnered with the Richmond Continental Society to provide turkeys to families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday in November 2021.

“These initiatives are so valuable because they help our student-athletes become more community-minded citizens and allows us to make a positive impact in our communities,” said Catherine Few. “You can just see the growth of these young women and we are very proud of the work they are doing to help others.”
