Sports Backers Half Marathon Training Team Begins August 8 & 9

Registration remains open for the Sports Backers Half Marathon Training Team, which will have its first group run starting at City Stadium on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9 at 7:30 a.m. This marks the seventh year of the Sports Backers Half Marathon Training Team under the direction of head coach Ro Gammon.

This 14-week program is designed to prepare runners for the American Family Fitness Half Marathon on Saturday, November 14, during the Anthem Richmond Marathon weekend. The program emphasizes the group approach to training.

“Joining the team was an awesome experience. I felt supported, prepared, and confident on race day,” said Nikkia Young, a 2014 Half Marathon Training Team participant. “The coaches were awesome and so was the group.”

Participants will meet at City Stadium every Saturday or Sunday morning for a group run with experienced and knowledgeable coaches that offer training advice and feedback. During the week, runners follow a written training schedule on their own that will prepare them to gradually and safely complete 13.1 miles on November 14. Half Marathon Training Team participants will receive:

  • 14-week training program starting on August 8 and 9 with a detailed written schedule for participants to follow
  • personal guidance from veteran coach Ro Gammon and her team of experienced coaches
  • organized and supported weekly group Saturday or Sunday morning runs
  • a special Sports Backers Half Marathon Training Team t-shirt and technical race shirt to wear during the race
  • entry in the 2015 American Family Fitness Half Marathon and all associated race benefits
  • special clinics on subjects like nutrition, running attire, and other related topics

The cost of the program is currently $155, which includes entry into the American Family Fitness Half Marathon. Online registration is available through August 22.
