Richmond International Dragon Boat Festival
Event Overview
Driven by the rhythmic beat of the drum, teams of 20 synchronized paddlers, one drummer, and a steersperson race 500 meters up the river in stunning 40-foot canoes adorned with vibrant Chinese dragon heads and tails. This exciting sport brings together social groups and businesses alike, fostering teamwork and camaraderie with every stroke. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-time paddler, there’s fun for everyone — with plenty of time to relax (or amp up the competition!) between races.
Registration will open in spring 2025
Requirements
We recommend teams to have a minimum of 16 to a maximum of 25 people (16-20 paddlers and 1 drummer, plus 4 alternates). All teams will compete in 3 x 500m races (qualifying, semi-final and final). Based on qualifying times, teams are seeded into their semi-final race. From each semi-final race, teams will be placed in a Championship Final or Consolation Final race.
Divisions
Mixed Division
Consist of a maximum of 10 male paddlers in the boat, drummer can be male or female (based on a 20 person paddler crew).
Open Division
Any combination of paddlers in the boat.
Women’s Division
All paddlers and drummer must be female.
