Local Grants Support Kids Run RVA and Call Federal Marathon, Jr. Participants
Thanks in part to a recent grant from the Altria Companies Employee Community Fund (ACECF), the Sports Backers’ Kids Run RVA program is able to support 28 elementary and middle schools this fall to initiate run clubs and encourage weekly physical activity. Many of these children will be participating in the Call Federal Marathon, Jr. on Saturday, October 25 at Byrd Park. Twenty-three groups coming to the event would not typically be able to participate without the guidance, targeted outreach, and financial assistance provided by Kids Run RVA staff and volunteers.
The $40,000 grant from Altria’s employee-managed giving program is a significant boost to Kids Run RVA, which offers free programs throughout the Richmond region to promote routine physical activity and combat the childhood obesity epidemic. The Richmond Road Runners Club and the Memorial Foundation for Children are considerable donors to the program as well. Over 12,000 school-aged youth participate annually in Kids Run RVA.
Call Federal Marathon, Jr. Celebrates Running with Race Festival and Multiple Distance Options
Online registration for the third-annual Call Federal Marathon, Jr., is set to close at 11:59pm on Thursday, October 23. Currently there are over 1,000 kids, many of whom are participants in Kids Run RVA programs in their schools and communities, signed up to participate. Walk-up registration will be available on race day at Byrd Park for the event, which will feature two distance options: a 0.5-mile course and a 1-mile course.
Registration for the Call Federal Marathon, Jr. includes a participant t-shirt, finisher medal, post-race food, and an exciting race festival featuring photo booths, a face painter, mascots, live music from The Diggity Dudes, and an appearance from Richmond favorite Jonathan the Juggler. The festival runs from 10:00am-2:00pm, with the half-mile distance starting at 12:00pm, and the one-mile distance taking off at 12:15pm.
