Urban Assault Mountain Bike Race

Competitors will choose between an 8 mile or 15 mile loop of the famous James River Park trails, which are considered one of the most technically challenging urban trail systems. The mountain bike course includes steep up hill and down hill single track trails, stairs over railroad tracks, tunnels, bridges, creek crossings and lots of natural obstacles. This is not your normal mountain bike course. Leave the beach comber bike in the garage for this one, mountain bikes only.

The Urban Assault is organized by the Sports Backers and Venture Richmond.

When: Saturday, May 16, 2009 - Noon
  All participants must check in prior to race from 10 - 11:30 a.m. on Brown's Island.
   
Where: Check in is on Brown's Island near where the race begins and ends. The race starts and finishes on the Tredegar Iron Works property near 5th Street.

Directions:  Take I-95 Exit 74-A onto the Downtown Expressway.  Take first exit on Canal Street heading West.  Make a left onto 5th Street South and take it to the riverfront.

Trail Rules: Please be aware that the trails used for this event are shared multi-use trails. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the IMBA Rules of the Trail.
   
Course Details:

The start is the same for both races: (Course updated May 12)

Short Course:

The riders will start just off 5th Street behind the American Civil War Center. They will go behind the Belle Isle parking lot, under the Lee Bridge then take a sharp right onto the gravel road up to the Lee Bridge.  Ride with traffic across the Lee Bridge then turn right and drop down the 22nd Street stairs and continue west on the gravel road.  Go up the 42nd Street stairs and continue west on Buttermilk Heights to the Boulevard Bridge.  After crossing the bridge you will turn left and enter the North Trail heading east.  Take the North Trail back to the Lee Bridge.  Stay straight under the Lee Bridge to the finish at 5th Street.

Long Course:

The riders will start just off 5th Street behind the American Civil War Center. They will go behind the Belle Isle parking lot, under the Lee Bridge then take a sharp right onto the gravel road up to the Lee Bridge.  Ride with traffic across the Lee Bridge then turn right and drop down the 22nd Street stairs and continue west on the gravel road.  Go up the 42nd Street stairs and head back east on Buttermilk.  When you get to Reedy Creek you will make a right through a tunnel and do a 3.7-mile loop in Forest Hill Park.  When you leave Forest Hill Park you will rejoin the Buttermilk Trail to the east and drop down the 22nd street stairs.  You will head west on the gravel road.  At the 42nd Street stairs you will go up but this time head west on Buttermilk Heights to the Boulevard Bridge.  After crossing the bridge you will turn left and enter the North Trail heading east.  Take the North Trail back to the Lee Bridge.  Stay straight under the Lee Bridge to the finish at 5th Street.
