Races are ranked based on their number of finishers and the only way you are considered an official finisher is by wearing your timing chip (distributed at packet pick up). Whether you are a runner or walker, we need you to wear your chip in order to be counted. Just follow the directions on the envelope your chip comes in to attach it properly to your shoe and remember to turn it in after crossing the finish line.

In order to provide the safest and most enjoyable event experience possible, the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k will utilize wave starts.

The Start Line for the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k is located on Broad Street (click here for the Course Map), just east of Harrison Street. All event participants will line up for the start based on the letter prefix on your bib number. This letter represents your wave and was assigned to you based on the predicted time you listed on your entry form.

Walkers
*Wave R also includes everyone who did not indicate a predicted time on their entry form and did not indicate that they planned to walk the race.

While lining up on Broad Street, please look for the volunteer holding the wave sign that corresponds to your bib. So if your bib number is B1244, then you will look for the “Wave B” sign. Your group will be walked into the starting corral as the start time for your wave approaches.

Please note:

  • Bib numbers and starting waves have already been assigned and it is no longer possible to change your predicted time. If you wish to start with someone who has a different predicted time, you may do so by starting in the slower person's wave. In other words, you may drop back to a slower wave, but no one may move up to a faster wave.
  • Be sure to pin your bib number to the front of your shirt. You must wear your bib number to be admitted into the starting corral.
  • Remember that we have chip timing to record your exact start time so your results will accurately reflect the time it took you to run the race no matter which corral you start in.

Participant Support

  • Pre-race water will be available in Monroe Park near the bag check area next to Laurel Street. At the start area there will be pre-race water on the north side of Broad Street near Hancock Street.
  • Water Stops, stocked with water and POWERade, will be positioned near miles 2, 3, 4 and 5 along the course. Water will also be available in the finish line area as you enter into Monroe Park.
  • Medical Tents will be located in the Start Area, on the north side of Broad Street near Hancock Street, and adjacent to the Finish Area in Monroe Park. Medical support is provided by Bon Secours.
  • Port-o-johns will be located in the start area on Broad Street near Shafer Street, on the course near each water stops and in Monroe Park they will be near Laurel and Main Streets. In addition, the VCU Siegel Center at Broad and Harrison Streets will have its bathrooms open prior to the start.

Race Etiquette
In order to make the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k an enjoyable experience for everyone, we ask all participants to follow these simple rules of race etiquette.

Finish Line
Upon crossing the Finish Line, a volunteer will be on hand to help remove your timing chip. For the safety of all participants, we ask that you then move to the end of the finish line corral and exit the finish line area immediately. From there, you may follow the signs to the Post Race Food tents.

10k Family Meeting Area
Upon exiting the Finish Line Corral, there will be an area to meet your family and friends. Just tell them to meet under the sign listing the letter of the alphabet that corresponds to the 10k participant's last name.
